Emergency Management for all.

This week we have been luck enough to deliver our Trigger Action Response Planning (TARP) to a team of engineers and Suva Fiji.  Trigger Action Response Planning was developed by New Zealand Mines Rescue Trust and Gauge Refrigeration Management Ltd  as we saw a large hole in the interface between End user, Emergency Responders and Ammonia Specialists.  TARP is a Coordinated Incident Management System (CIMS) based approach that is typically left to executive manageme...

Chilling with - Dennis Carswell

In light of the upcoming World Refrigeration Day this month, I thought no time was more suited to interview a few special individuals that have been valiantly keeping Aotearoa's refrigeration Industry ticking over for generations.  I have been hunting people for interviews for what seems ages now - fridgies are quite the challenge to get center stage. This first interview I managed to bag is with none other than Dennis Carswell of Excel Refrigeration. Dennis is one of the few fridgies ...

Arguably regulation and the threat of punitive damages seems to be the biggest impulse to purchase fixed gas detection, on the contrary there is another angle which provides better financial decision making - situational awareness! Most people when they hear “Ammonia leak” they conjure up this horrible incident with gruesome burns and people coughing, vomiting and dying all over the show. Of course, we must not disrespect that although something like this is rare in occurrence, it must be mi...

Do you have to notify Worksafe for an Ammonia leak?

In short, unless you know the local concentration, Ammonia leaks must be reported to Worksafe and they must also be investigated internally.  This is a tricky subject that will no doubt spark some debate from separate corners of the industry and government. Education on the matter does need more visibility not to mention further discussion, clarification and possibly the setting of firm parameters from the legislator to avoid confusion. It is of course difficult to draw a line in the sand a...

Photonic Innovation FLD Sale

Why is this such a big deal?  Until now laser based detection technology has been pricey. This special offer lines the remarkable NZ technology inline with its electro-semi conductor competition.   Photonic Innovation laser sensors are not depleted upon exposure to ammonia and other toxic gases. This means that frequent maintenance/calibration is no longer a requirement. With no filaments or chemical components, there is no need to calibrate the device and no need to replace senso...

Ammonia Safety Day Auckland 2018

Ammonia Safety Day Auckland 2018 lots of great discussions taking place.Unfortunately very little industry participation which was very interesting since this type of event hasn't occurred in Auckland in decades. Other regions and geographic locations climb over each other to secure a spot. In Hawkes Bay we reached full capacity in less than two weeks from promotion. Auckland on the other hand had just one representation from the refrigeration industry? This had a few of the regulators scratc...

When was the last time you stress tested your emergency response plan ?

Currently in New Zealand, Ammonia used in a refrigeration system is exempt from many of the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017. What does a good Ammonia refrigeration operation look like?

Often i have to check my content in regards to what type of picture i am painting in respect to Anhydrous Ammonia, in particular its defamation. More common than not, Ammonia receives a negative stigma from end users due to its hazardous nature, unintentionally I have also played a role in this whilst attempting to educate people on the fundamental & easily rectifiable issues that are concurrent in our industry.I thought it would be a valuable exercise to come up with a few items or areas in whi...
